Major Milestone Achieved! 🌍

The SURPASS project, a pioneering initiative focused on developing Safe-, Sustainable-by-Design (SSbD) polymers and enhancing recyclability, has successfully completed its Second Periodic Review with the European Commission. The review, held on February 5th, 2025, brought together project partners and EC representatives to assess the progress made over the past year, as the project moves toward its conclusion in November 2025.

Dedicated to advancing the circular economy for plastics, the SURPASS project collaborates with leading researchers, businesses, and industry experts to create innovative solutions that enhance plastic materials' design, use, and reuse. By addressing sustainability challenges, the project aims to deliver practical, high-impact innovations applicable across multiple sectors.

“This project is all about innovation – finding new ways to make polymers not just more sustainable, but also safer and more easily recyclable,” said María Isabel Salinas, Communications Officer for the SURPASS Project. Project Coordinator Simon Clavaguera added, “We were thrilled to share the progress of the SURPASS project with the European Commission and to receive such positive feedback from our project adviser and monitors. Their recognition is a testament to the dedication and hard work of our partners, whose commitment and excellence have driven the project forward from day one. With less than a year to go, we remain focused on delivering high-value contributions to the plastics circular economy. The bar is set high, but I have no doubt that this final phase will be just as successful—if not even more!”

The review highlighted significant advancements across all work packages, with particular emphasis on the case studies in building, transport, and packaging and the associated SSbD assessments. These studies demonstrate promising developments, reinforcing the project’s potential to drive change in key industries. Feedback from project monitors and adviser was overwhelmingly positive, acknowledging the remarkable progress made since the project's inception.

Key achievements presented during the session included the successful completion of major deliverables, milestones and several KPIs, reaffirming that the project is on track to meet its ambitious objectives. As the project enters its final year, efforts will focus on maximizing its impact by contributing to digital infrastructure, exploring market acceptance, and addressing intellectual property and value chain considerations.

With under a year to go, the consortium remains committed to delivering groundbreaking results that will contribute to a more sustainable and circular plastics economy. The SURPASS project continues to push boundaries, and its final phase promises to bring transformative solutions to the market.
